A Chilly Day in Brooklyn with the Boylands

Words and photos by Brandon Thomas Brown

The Boyland family met me at Herbert Von King Park on a crisp day that carried just enough chill to keep us moving.

The kind of weather where hands tuck into pockets between moments, and laughter becomes a way to stay warm.

Their little ones took to the space instantly. Running along the paths, climbing where they could, finding their own rhythm in the open air. Nothing forced, nothing overly directed. Just the energy of being outside, together.

There’s something about photographing families in a park like this. It opens things up. The kids lead, the parents follow, and somewhere in between, these small, honest moments start to appear. A quick hug to warm up. A laugh that cuts through the cold. The kind of gestures that might go unnoticed if you weren’t looking for them.

It was chilly, yes, but it didn’t matter. The movement, the closeness, the playfulness, it all worked in our favor. Sometimes the best sessions come from leaning into what the day gives you, instead of trying to change it.

With the Boylands, it became less about the weather and more about presence. Just a family, outdoors, making the most of a day that asked them to stay close.
